Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Preheat the grill
Preheat an outdoor grill to medium-high heat (375°F-400°F).
Make the dry rub
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
Prepare the chicken
Remove the giblets from the cavity of the whole chicken and discard. Rinse the chicken inside and out with cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Rub the olive oil all over the chicken, then sprinkle the dry rub evenly over the entire surface of the chicken, massaging it into the skin.
Prepare the beer can
Open the beer can and pour out (or drink) about half of the beer. Place the beer can on a stable surface.
Mount the chicken
Lower the chicken onto the beer can, so that the can is inserted into the cavity of the chicken and the chicken is sitting upright on the grill grates, using the beer can and the chicken legs as a tripod.
Grill the chicken
Close the grill lid and cook the chicken for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the internal temperature of the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F (74°C). Rotate the chicken every 30 minutes to ensure even cooking.
Rest and serve
sing tongs, carefully remove the chicken from the grill and the beer can. Let the chicken rest for 10 minutes before carving. Serve the barbecue beer can chicken hot, enjoying the juicy, flavorful meat and the crispy, smoky skin.
