Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Cream the butter and sugar
In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs and vanilla
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, and mix until just combined.
Bake the cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and cool completely on a wire rack.
Prepare the ganache
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until simmering. Remove from heat and add the chopped dark chocolate. Let stand for 1 minute, then stir until smooth.
Chop the hazelnuts
Roughly chop the hazelnuts and set aside.
Assemble the cake
Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread 1/2 cup of the chocolate hazelnut spread evenly over the top. Place the second cake layer on top and spread the remaining chocolate hazelnut spread over the top and sides of the cake.
Add the ganache and hazelnuts
Pour the chocolate ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides. Sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts over the top of the cake.
Chill and serve
Refrigerate the cake for at least 30 minutes to allow the ganache to set. Serve the chocolate hazelnut layered cake chilled and enjoy your indulgent dessert!
