Steps

Read instructions and get ready to cook

1
Cook the pasta

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook the penne pasta in a large pot of salted water according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

2
Prepare the sauce

Chop the onion and mince the garlic. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

3
Add the tomatoes and seasonings

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, sugar, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4
Combine the pasta and sauce

Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet with the tomato sauce. Toss to coat the pasta evenly.

5
Assemble the pasta bake

Transfer half of the pasta mixture to a 9x13-inch baking dish. Tear half of the basil leaves and sprinkle them over the pasta. Top with 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining pasta, basil leaves, and cheese.

6
Bake and serve

Bake the pasta in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
