Traditional Cuban Sandwich
25min
4 servings
This Traditional Cuban Sandwich features layers of juicy roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard pressed between crispy bread until golden and melty. While authentic versions use Cuban bread, this recipe adapts using a baguette for accessibility without sacrificing flavor. The combination of savory meats, tangy pickles, and melted cheese creates a perfect harmony of flavors and textures that honors this iconic sandwich's Miami and Tampa roots.

Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Prepare the bread
Cut the baguette into 4 equal sections. Slice each section horizontally to create top and bottom halves.
Prepare the garlic butter
Peel and mince the garlic cloves. In a small bowl, mix softened butter with minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
Prepare the pickles
Slice the dill pickles thinly lengthwise. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
Slice the cheese
Slice the Swiss cheese into thin slices.
Slice the meats
Slice the roasted pork shoulder into thin slices. Ensure the ham is thinly sliced.
Spread mustard
Spread yellow mustard evenly on the inside of each bottom bread half.
Layer the ham
Place 2 oz of ham on each bottom bread half, on top of the mustard.
Add the roasted pork
Layer 3 oz of roasted pork slices on top of the ham.
Add the pickles
Arrange pickle slices evenly over the pork layer.
Add the cheese
Place 2 oz of Swiss cheese slices on top of the pickles.
Close the sandwiches
Place the top bread halves over the assembled ingredients. Press down gently to compact the sandwiches.
Spread garlic butter
Spread the garlic butter mixture on the outside of both the top and bottom of each sandwich.
Heat the press
Preheat a panini press, sandwich press, or large skillet over medium heat.
Grill the sandwiches
Place the sandwiches in the press or skillet. If using a skillet, place another heavy pan on top and press down firmly.
Cook until golden
Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bread is golden and crispy. Flip if using a skillet and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
Ensure cheese is melted
Continue cooking until the cheese is completely melted and the sandwich is heated through.
Serve immediately
Remove from heat and cut each sandwich diagonally. Serve hot while the cheese is still melty.
