Steps

Read instructions and get ready to cook

1
Prepare the dough

Warm milk to about 110°F (45°C). Add yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar to milk. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy. In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of flour and salt. Add milk mixture, melted butter, remaining sugar, and egg. Mix until combined. Gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.

2
Knead and rise

Knead dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

3
Prepare the filling

Melt butter. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.

4
Prepare the apple topping

Peel, core, and dice apples. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add apples, sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 5-7 minutes until apples are soft but not mushy. Remove from heat and let cool.

5
Prepare the nuts and raisins

Chop nuts if they're large pieces. If raisins are very dry, soak in warm water for 5 minutes, then drain.

6
Roll out the dough

Punch down risen dough. On a floured surface, roll into a rectangle about 12x18 inches.

7
Add the filling

Brush dough with melted butter. Sprinkle evenly with cinnamon-sugar mixture.

8
Roll and cut

Starting from the long edge, roll dough tightly into a log. Cut into 12 equal pieces.

9
Second rise

Place rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.

10
Preheat the oven

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

11
Bake

Bake rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

12
Add toppings

Remove rolls from oven. Spoon apple mixture over the top. Sprinkle with raisins and nuts. Dust with additional cinnamon if desired.

13
Serve

Serve warm. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
