Steps

Read instructions and get ready to cook

1
Prepare the cake base

Slice the pound cake into 1-inch thick slices. Arrange the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, fitting them tightly together to form a solid base. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for 30 minutes to firm up the cake.

2
Add the ice cream layer

Remove the baking sheet from the freezer. Soften the vanilla ice cream slightly and spread it evenly over the pound cake base, creating a smooth, level surface. Return the baking sheet to the freezer for another 30 minutes to allow the ice cream to harden.

3
Prepare the meringue

In a large, clean bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer until foamy. Gradually add the sugar and cream of tartar, continuing to beat until stiff, glossy peaks form. Beat in the vanilla extract.

4
Assemble the Baked Alaska

Remove the baking sheet from the freezer. Quickly and evenly spread the meringue over the ice cream, making sure to seal the meringue to the edges of the cake base. Use the back of a spoon to create swirls and peaks in the meringue for a decorative effect.

5
Toast the meringue

Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C). Place the assembled Baked Alaska in the oven and bake for 3-5 minutes, or until the meringue is lightly golden brown. Alternatively, use a kitchen torch to toast the meringue evenly.

6
Serve immediately

Remove the Baked Alaska from the oven and serve immediately, slicing it into individual portions.
