Steps

Read instructions and get ready to cook

1
Prepare the dough

In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, sugar, active dry yeast, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the warm water and vegetable oil, stirring until a soft dough forms.

2
Knead the dough

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

3
Prepare the filling

While the dough is rising, prepare the filling. Chop the char siu pork into small pieces. In a bowl, mix together the chopped pork, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and sesame oil until well combined.

4
Divide the dough

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

5
Fill the buns

Flatten each dough ball into a disc, about 4 inches in diameter. Place 2 tablespoons of the pork filling in the center of each disc. Gather the edges of the dough up and around the filling, pinching to seal at the top.

6
Let the buns rise

Place the filled buns on a piece of parchment paper, seam-side down, and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.

7
Steam the buns

Arrange the buns in a steamer basket, leaving space between each bun for expansion. Steam the buns over boiling water for 12-15 minutes, or until they have puffed up and are cooked through.

8
Serve and enjoy

Remove the Char Siu Bao from the steamer and serve hot. Enjoy the soft, fluffy buns filled with savory and sweet barbecued pork.
