Prepare potatoes
Peel the russet potatoes and cut them into 1-inch cubes. Place the cubed potatoes in a large pot.
Cook potatoes
Cover the potatoes with cold water and add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
Prepare garlic
While the potatoes are cooking, peel the garlic cloves and crush them with the flat side of a knife.
Heat butter and cream
In a small saucepan, combine the unsalted butter, heavy cream, and crushed garlic. Heat over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm.
Drain potatoes
Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander and return them to the pot.
Mash potatoes
Using a potato masher or hand mixer, mash the potatoes until they are mostly smooth.
Add butter and cream mixture
Remove the garlic cloves from the butter and cream mixture. Gradually add the mixture to the mashed potatoes, stirring constantly until the potatoes are smooth and creamy.
Season and serve
Season the mashed potatoes with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of salt and the black pepper. Stir to combine. Serve hot.
