Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Rinse and cook the lentils
Rinse the toor dal and masoor dal until the water runs clear. In a large pot, combine the lentils, water, and turmeric powder. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the lentils are tender, about 30 minutes.
Prepare the vegetables
Chop the onion, mince the garlic, slice the green chili peppers, and chop the tomatoes.
Temper the spices
In a separate pan, heat the ghee or oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown. Add the minced garlic and sliced green chili peppers, and cook for another minute.
Add tomatoes and spices
Add the chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, salt, and garam masala to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
Combine the dal and tempering
Pour the tempering mixture into the cooked dal. Stir well and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Garnish and serve
Chop the fresh cilantro. Serve the dal tadka hot, garnished with chopped cilantro.
