Preheat the skillet
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Butter the bread
Spread 1 tablespoon of butter evenly on one side of each slice of white bread.
Place the bread in the skillet
Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the preheated skillet.
Add the cheese
Place the cheddar cheese slices evenly on top of the bread in the skillet.
Top with the second slice of bread
Place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese, butter-side up.
Grill the sandwich
Cook the sandwich for 3-4 minutes, or until the bottom slice of bread is golden brown and the cheese starts to melt.
Flip the sandwich
Using a spatula, carefully flip the sandwich over and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
