Prepare ingredients
Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Grate the Parmesan cheese.
Mix meatball ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, half of the minced garlic, half of the chopped onion, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
Form meatballs
Using your hands, shape the meat mixture into 1 1/2-inch meatballs. Place the meatballs on a plate and set aside.
Sauté onion and garlic
In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the remaining chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
Add tomatoes and seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer.
Add meatballs to sauce
Gently place the meatballs into the simmering sauce, making sure they are evenly spaced and submerged in the sauce.
Simmer meatballs
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet or saucepan, and let the meatballs simmer in the sauce for 30 minutes, or until they are cooked through and the sauce has thickened slightly.
