Steps

Read instructions and get ready to cook

1
Drain and rinse beans

Drain the canned beans in a colander and rinse under cold running water.

2
Prepare vegetables

Peel and finely chop the onion. Peel and mince the garlic cloves.

3
Simmer beans

In a large pot, combine the rinsed beans, chopped onion, and 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

4
Mash beans

Using a potato masher or the back of a spoon, mash the beans until they reach your desired consistency (smooth or slightly chunky).

5
Heat oil

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.

6
Fry beans

Add the mashed beans to the skillet and stir in the minced garlic, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until the beans are slightly dry and begin to crisp on the bottom, about 10 minutes.

7
Serve

Transfer the refried beans to a serving bowl and serve hot.
