Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Prepare the skewers
If using wooden skewers, soak in water for 15 minutes to prevent burning.
Prepare the hot dogs
Remove hot dogs from packaging. Pat dry with paper towels.
Skewer the hot dogs
Insert a skewer lengthwise through the center of each hot dog. The skewer should go all the way through for stability.
Create the spiral cut
Place a hot dog on a cutting board with the skewer horizontal. Using a sharp knife, make a diagonal cut into the hot dog. Start at one end and spiral around the hot dog toward the other end. Cut at an angle, going almost all the way through to the skewer. Maintain even pressure for a consistent spiral.
Stretch the hot dog
Gently pull and twist the hot dog along the skewer. This will open up the spiral cuts. The hot dog should extend to about twice its original length.
Repeat with remaining hot dogs
Repeat the spiral cutting and stretching process with the remaining hot dogs.
Prepare for cooking
Heat a grill, grill pan, or skillet to medium-high heat. If using a skillet, add vegetable oil.
Cook the spiral hot dogs
Place the spiral hot dogs on the cooking surface. Cook for 2 minutes on each side, rotating occasionally. The edges should become crispy and caramelized. The spiral will open further during cooking.
Prepare the onion
Peel the onion. Dice finely.
Prepare the buns
Lightly toast the hot dog buns if desired.
Remove skewers (optional)
Carefully remove the skewers from the hot dogs if preferred. Alternatively, leave skewers in for a fun presentation.
Assemble the hot dogs
Place each spiral hot dog in a bun.
Add condiments
Drizzle with mustard and ketchup. Add relish and diced onions.
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. If skewers are left in, caution guests to remove before eating.
