Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Rinse the rice
Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 15 minutes, then drain and set aside.
Prepare the vegetables
Finely chop the tomatoes, onion, garlic cloves, and ginger.
Sauté the cumin seeds
In a large pot or saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and sauté until they start to sizzle and become fragrant, about 30 seconds.
Sauté the onion and ginger
Add the chopped onion and ginger to the pot. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent and soft, about 3-4 minutes.
Add garlic and spices
Add the minced garlic, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt to the pot. Stir to combine and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
Add tomatoes and cook
Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften and break down, about 5-7 minutes.
Add rice and water
Add the soaked and drained basmati rice to the pot, along with the water. Stir to combine.
Cook the rice
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
Fluff and serve
Remove the pot from the heat and let it stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork and serve hot.
