Steps
Read instructions and get ready to cook
Preheat the oven
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
Prepare the caramel sauce
In a small saucepan, melt the butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth and bubbly. Pour the caramel sauce into the prepared cake pan.
Prepare the apples
Peel, core, and slice the apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges. Arrange the apple slices in a circular pattern on top of the caramel sauce in the cake pan.
Mix the dry ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
Mix the wet ingredients
In a large bowl, beat the granulated sugar and eggs until light and fluffy. Add the milk and vanilla extract, and mix until combined.
Combine wet and dry ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour the batter
Pour the cake batter evenly over the arranged apples in the cake pan.
Bake the cake
Bake the cake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
Invert and serve
Run a knife around the edge of the cake pan to loosen the cake. Place a serving plate on top of the cake pan and carefully invert the cake onto the plate. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy your delicious Upside-Down Apple Cake!
